Reflexology has been around for many thousands of years, with evidence from hieroglyphics that it was used in Ancient Egypt. There are also indications from early Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Russian artefacts that Reflexology was used in these ancient civilizations too.
The Association of Reflexologists defines Reflexology as;
'... a non-intrusive complementary therapy based on the theory that the different organs and systems of the body can be mapped to different points or areas on the feet, hands, face, lower leg and ears. Reflexologists believe that through working these points or areas they may have an energetic effect on the corresponding organs or systems within the body, encouraging the body towards a state of homeostasis'
Essentially, Reflexology is the belief that the feet in particular, although other areas too, form a 'map' and each point or area on this map corresponds with a different area on the body. Working these various points by applying pressure and using massage techniques will help you to relax, both mentally and physically, and promote a sense of wellbeing.
At the bottom of this page is a link to the Association of Reflexology 'foot map' which shows the various systems and organs mapped out.
Reflexology does not claim to diagnose or treat specific conditions and should not be considered an alternative to conventional medicine. It treats the whole person, not just the symptoms that present themselves. By using an holistic approach, Reflexology aims to restore the body's natural balance, encouraging the body to maximise its natural healing abilities. Many health professionals now recognise Reflexology as an established and effective complimentary therapy.
Reflexology may be helpful in many areas. Whether you are looking for help in managing an existing condition, ways to manage the day to day stresses in life and maintain health and wellbeing. or just a one off treat, Reflexology offers something for you.
